BananaStock(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Tony Stewart will return to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in this Sunday’s race at Atlanta. He had missed the last three races after his car struck and killed driver Kevin Ward Jr. at an August 9 sprint car race in upstate New York.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Department is continuing its investigation into the incident.
“Tony Stewart has received all necessary clearances required to return to all racing activities, and therefore is eligible to compete this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway,” NASCAR Executive Vice President Steve O’Donnell said in a statement. “NASCAR has remained in constant contact with his race team, and we will stay very close to this situation as Stewart returns to competition.”
Stewart is a three-time Sprint Cup champion, having won 48 races in 542 career starts.
